Our specially designed project management system - Adder 2020 – ensures that all projects run smoothly, on time and to budget. Adder enables us to report accurately and regularly to our clients and to foretell any variation due to construction or cost problems, before they happen, thus giving our clients and ourselves peace of mind. Projects are built using “Inspection and Test” plans that detail the specifications of all projects.

A specific Environmental Health and Safety Plan is created for each project undertaken by ESD. Site specific induction plans are drawn up, and all employees, sub-contractors and visitors are trained prior to commencing works. Tool box meetings are held on a regular basis to discuss any issues, and Environmental Health and Safety audits are carried out regularly.

ESD and the Golden Mean

ESD stands for “environmentally sustainable development” – the balance between the needs of nature and the requirements of man. Accordingly, the ESD logo encompasses the “Golden Mean” or “phi” which appears clearly and regularly in the realm of things that grow and unfold in steps, and that includes all living things. Also called the Divine Proportion, the design of life is based on the golden mean.

The golden mean is a mathematical conceit – look below to see the mathematics of this conceit - and yet it is extremely pleasing to the eye. Notice that the golden mean is made up solely of squares, yet the overall image is a rectangle. This rectangle, if you compare the measurement of its long sides to its short sides, has the magic ratio of 1.618. Also if you look at the curved lines within each of the squares you will notice that these are in fact perfect quarter circles. The golden mean represents the ESD edge.

The mathematics of the golden mean

The golden mean goes very much unnoticed in our everyday life in such things as buildings, plants and other living creatures - yet we find these things strangely pleasing on the eye. This is the magical number 1.618. So how is this number found? An ancient mathematician by the name of Fibonacci discovered that if you start with the numbers 0 and 1 then add them together you get a new number - in this case 1. Easy enough but what if you add the last number and the new number together? You get another new number, 2. Keep doing this and you will end up with a very very long list of unique numbers. (see below.)

This is known as the Fibonacci Series.
0,1 -->add them together gives new number 1
0,1,1 --> add the last two number together and new number is now 2
0,1,1,2 --> add last two numbers together and new number is now 3
0,1,1,2,3 --> add last two numbers together and new number is now 5
0,1,1,2,3,5
The series eventually grows like below into a series of unique numbers
0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144, 233,377 to infinity and beyond!
The golden mean is a ratio: starting from zero and if you take any two SEQUENTIAL numbers from the Fibonacci Series above, and calculate the ratio between them, then a very interesting pattern emerges. If you keep going you will see that the decimal figure will revolve around the magic number 1.618.
