Expansion of the Container
Terminal: Port Botany
The expansion of the container terminal port at
Botany is one of the largest infrastructure
projects currently being undertaken in
Australia. It includes the reclamation of 60
hectares of land for five new shipping berths,
an upgrade and restoration of Foreshore Beach,
two new lookouts at the eastern and western
sides of the beach, pedestrian and cycle paths,
a new boat ramp, a new pedestrian bridge to link
Sir Joseph Banks Park with Foreshore Beach,
improvement of the habitat for shore birds, and
environmental enhancement works to Penrhyn
Estuary.
ESD Landscape Contractors is working with
Baulderstone to upgrade and restore Foreshore
Beach, provide an ecological area and improve
the habitat of shore birds, and enhance
environmental works at Penrhyn Estuary. ESD is
growing half a million provenance plants from
seed for the highly sensitive environmental
project.
Penrhyn Estuary is a
locally significant
site for migratory shorebirds containing
saltmarsh and seagrass communities. The
importance of this habitat and its close
proximity to the work area requires that extreme
care needs to be taken during construction. ESD
specialises in habitat protection works. The
estuary also supports a number of saltmarsh
species, which together are designated as a
threatened ecological community in NSW.
ESD will adhere to strict auditing and record
keeping requirements and will provide
landscapers and environmentalists throughout the
entire project from seed collection to long term
maintenance.
